Larrakia Turf Farm
Not Just Watching the Grass Grow
The Turf Farm is a joint venture between the Larrakia Development Corporation and Wolpers Grahl.
The farm is around 10 hectares but only half of that has been operating since its inception in 2003. However, after four years of negotiations with PowerWater, the Turf Farm now has access to the end pond at the neighbouring Palmerston Sewerage Facility. This will bring the remaining five hectares into operation and enable the Farm to switch from its present town water supply to the cost-efficiencies and conservation properties of this new source of effluent water.
To date the Farm has generated over 40 hectares of quality Turf, supplying its parent companies, Larrakia Environmental Services and Wolpers Grahl, as well as Palmerston City Council. It offers the three popular varieties of Turf: Broad Leaf Buffalo, Bermuda Couch and Lime Light Companion.
The Farm is also looking to generate future employment opportunities and will steer its workers to undertake Certificates 1 and 2 in Horticulture, with the aim of creating a pool of future greenkeepers for the Top End.
